The Architecture department, University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria just concluded their Architecture week, a gracious event which started on Tuesday November 11th and ended Thursday November 13th, 2014. The Event brought together the current student of Architecture department, Lecturers, invited Architects, NIA (Nigerian Institute of Architects) representatives for Plateau state chapter and special guest of honor Arc. Inalegwu Ella, fnia.
The event kicked off exactly 8:00am on Tuesday with arrival and registration and by 9:00 am, students proceeded to tour NVRI (National Veterinary Research Institute) and NIPPS (National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies) construction sites in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.
At the tour, Architect Oguntoye and Arc. Mangden were able to make students understand what Nigerian Architecture is and the need for Building Identity. They both noted that there is a need for students of architecture and Architects in Nigeria to put a face on Nigerian Architecture by adding our identity. They also added that all over the world, Architecture of each region has its distinct characteristics and such should not be left out for Nigerian Architecture.

At the tour, students were also encouraged to learn about building materials that encourage adaptability of buildings to their native environment. They were shown reasons why local building materials should be used to develop Nigerian Architecture identity and the need for more sustainability in Nigerian Architecture. Some of the buildings that were seen by the students during the tour were also criticized by the lecturers showing them the good and the bad sides of the buildings.

According to Arc. Oguntoye's lecture on Building identity, it was concluded that this building can only exist in Jos due to the type of stone works and the other materials that were used to make the building adaptable to the weather.

In having a gracious architecture, a building must be well incorporated into its environment in order to create harmony and offer solutions to the user. This building was one of the buildings criticized at NVRI, Jos to have meet up to 80% of these expectations as it is seen to be well suited for its environment.
