MAKING MORE MONEY AS AN ARCHITECT

This post is basically for the up-and-coming architects who are not really making much presently in the field, it is not always an easy road to becoming a big architect and at the low level, the commonest thing is doing more and getting less, therefore it is a necessity to think of ways of making more money as an architect especially those ways that can still complement your architectural practice.
Most time, it is not necessary that the resources needed for you to fund your architectural career should come from architecture; it could come from other sources, so widen your imagination and put your other talents and ideas to work in order to make more money as an architect. To really do well as an architect, you need more money and that means you need to create more opportunity for yourself other than architecture.
Why waiting for the next client to come or why thinking of where the next project is coming from when you can get other things done to make more money for yourself.
In lieu of this, we present to you these lovely list of other things you can do a to make more money as an architect.

(1)    Photography
You don’t really need to be a professional photographer before you can do well in this area; all you need is your architectural sense of photography. You can take some nice shots while on vacation or your visit to a park in the city or one lovely monument and sell it online at some website like www.123rf.com you can also make collections from nature and sell it as album or as digital collection to some people who appreciate stuffs like that on www.fiverr.com

(2)    Setting up a visualization company
It does not really need to be a big visualization company, you can start very small. Nowadays, the visualization industry is really doing great and there are more demands because stuffs like 3D modeling, Animation, VFX E.t.c are needed often in this our tech savvy society. It is needed in entertainment, game, product design and scientific research industry E.t.c. So, why not join the league of great Visualizer out there.

(3)    Setting up a mini Furniture company
In doing this, it is not necessary you have to be the one making the furniture items yourself, all you need is just to get the right people in that line to work with you. Your knowledge of architecture and a good market study will be of great help to you in knowing what kind of furniture you need to produce. ALL YOU NEED IS TO START SMALL BUT THINK BIG, remember, you are not the first architect to be into furniture making business, Frank Lloyd Wright was a very good example. For Wright to fulfill the ideal Organic Architecture, He designed his own furniture that suits his organic buildings. So, go ahead and do like the big Lloyd Wright.

(4)    Product making
Architects are creative people who love to imagine a lot of interesting and unique stuffs. So, why not direct part of your imagination into making a creative product that will not cost you anything beyond little cash and your imaginative ideas. I believe if the product is creative enough, people will be willing and eager to pay for it. If you think you have got the ideas but you have no money at all, why not set up a kickstarter campaign to reach out for crowd sourcing. And if you think you are loaded with a lot of ideas and you do not have resources to bring them to reality, then go ahead and sell some of the ideas to get the most valuable idea going.

(5)    Get into Business.
If you are not a product making person and you do not really like the furniture making stuffs, why not get into business, buying and selling stuffs could make you more bucks. You might need to sell something relevant to architecture if you think you might not feel too comfortable with what people might say about selling stuffs other than architecture but for me, I don’t think there is anything wrong with selling stuffs and there are no profession ethics, laws or code of conduct that negate that.
You might just need to consider doing some business that will not belittle architecture or those that will waste your time and probably disturb you in practicing architecture. For example, if you have friends who don’t have time to do shopping by themselves, why not spare some time and buy some nice outfits to resell to them, mind you, you are an architect, you know those outfits that really make sense and could create impulse buying.

(6)    Writing Jobs
Architects are also great writers, we don’t just draw, we can write great stuffs too. Architecture is poetic and most architects can be seen as poets. Why not take up a writing job and let your creativity work for you. It is so easy to thrive in writing stuffs other than architecture as an up-and-coming architect, in areas like sci-fi, creative short stories, romance E.t.c. So, when next you have some spare time or while you are waiting for the next project to come, pick up your pen and write. The good news is that there are so many website where you can get your write up published for a peanut or for free; there are also sites that you can sell your write up directly.

(7)    Real Estate.
Do you have a lot of ideas on how commercial buildings should look like rationally and how the owner of a building do not need to make the occupants less comfortable in order to make more profits then put that to work by designing to sell. I know you will be surprised I mentioned real estate as part of what you can do to make more money as an architect because you are thinking it need a lot of money but I believe you can start very small even with just a bachelor pad, tiny house or a sustainable bungalow created from recycled materials.

Other areas you might also consider in making more money as an architect are;
(8)    Modeling
(9)    Fashion designing

I hope with the little I have written today on how to make more money as an architect, I have been able to pass useful information across. Let us try to talk more on other areas you think an architect can also make more money by dropping comments.
