WHY AN ARCHITECT SHOULD SUPERVISE A BUILDING PROJECT.

When embarking on a new project, one of the hardest decisions to make is choosing who will supervise the project, the success or failure of any building project depends mostly on project management and supervision. When a building project is effectively supervised, all roles coordinated and all actors managed effectively, there is high tendency for success in such project and when it is done otherwise, the reverse might be the case.

In lieu of this, it means the person who supervise a building project plays a great role in determining the level of success of such project. So, the question is who should supervise your building project in order to record optimum success?

Supervision should not be confused to be management as both are two different things. In today's article, our concern is about who should supervise your building project.

Supervision is defined as directing people at work in order to play their roles effectively. So, talking about who should supervise a building project, majority of project owners or clients do have problem deciding the best but the truth is not far fetched, the main person you need to get an effective supervision for your building project is AN ARCHITECT, this is because the building designs originates from him and he is the one that understand best how he want the building to to look like right from the stage of conceptualization minding your own inputs as clients. So, why should an architect supervise a building project?

REASONS WHY AN ARCHITECT SHOULD SUPERVISE YOUR BUILDING PROJECT.

1.   He is jack of all trades but MASTER of designs.

Architecture cut across all fields so, an architect understand little about most trades outside architecture and they have a way of making something great out of their knowledge in them.

2.   He understands the core idea (central idea) around which the project revolves.

Since he is the originator of the design, he knows the central idea that hold the design piece together and how to use such idea to create a whole from parts.

3.   He will protect his work and integrity on site thus protecting the interest of the client than anyone else.

An architect will go extra mile to protect his work and see his designs come alive during construction, with an architect on site, you can go to bed every night without having to stress yourself much on what will happen on site the next day.

4.   An architect will not stop at anything until the best is achieved.

He understand that good is certainly not good enough so he will not stop until best is being achieved.

5.   An architect will not compromise his sense of functionality and aesthetics for anything.

His sense of functionality and aesthetics and need to create a usable space for the user will not make him compromise anything to deliver less than what is expected.

6.   He understands that there is no Utopian design but there is surely a job well done so he will not get tired correcting workers on site till the best is achieved.

An architect knows that there is nothing like 100% perfect design but he sure understand that every work requires their own special treatment to have the best.

7.   The principle of designing for the user is so important to him during the phase of design and in construction.

He is not just an architect on paper, he also understand what is required to have the building constructed to suit the user's need.

So whenever you are stuck deciding who will deliver the best supervision for your building project, just remember the first choice; An Architect.

  1. Where then do you place the Builder.........An Architect should discharge his own duties without intruding into other people's line. His presence is greatly needed on site but not for the supervision aspect.

  2. @ Gbenga Ayeni, first and foremost, this is an opinion post, second, supervision is different from management. An architect on site will not in any way intrude into other people's work but only cordinate all the key players to work together to deliver the best result. He direct people on site- that's supervision not manage the site. It's possible for the client to allow builder, project manager or better still the contractor to manage the site but it's expedient to allow the architect to cordinate.
