AUGMENTED REALITY AND ARCHITECTURE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.

Augmented reality offers the opportunity of superimposing computer-generated image on a real-world environment of a viewer thus allowing both the computer generated image and the real world environment  to be viewed as purely a single entity.

Augmented reality is done in real time and semantic context with environmental elements such as in sports scores on TV during a match. Augmented reality give room for digital manipulation  of the real world and real time interaction between the computer generated image and the real world. (wikipedia)

Augmented reality cut across many fields and profession and its application are numerous. For augmented reality to be possible, its hardware are to be put in place which are; processors, display, sensors and input devices.

How augmented reality relate to architecture and the purpose it serves in Architecture?

In architecture, augmented reality offers the opportunity of merging a 3D image of a proposed project  in order to be integrated into its site where it will be built to ensure complemented sight seeing, this can allow you to view a building exterior while it is superimposed on its site in a way that you can see through the exterior and get to feel the interior spaces and layout including all its objects.

To understand augmented reality in architecture in a plain language, think of you being inside the environment of your favorite video game as if you are inside your t.v screen while you are still so much behind your T.V screen and holding the game pads inside your room.

Augmented reality can be used during presentations to enable the proposed project 3D or animated design to be viewed on its site as if it is being constructed in real time. This can be shown to clients to enable them see how the construction will be carried out on site through the animated sequence or images displayed in real time. This will allow the client and the viewer to have the opportunity of seeing their projects come alive even before it will be built.

There are lots of apps that enables architects to use Augmented reality, in the next post, we will talk about those apps and where to download them.

So, if augmented reality is good for architecture, why are architects still slow in embracing it?
Augmented reality has not been fully integrated and blended into architecture design work flow, it has not been fully developed to enable architects access it from their existing design tools without the stress of changing their work flow. For architects to embrace augmented reality more, it has to become a design tool flexible enough to be used within the existing design tools.

  1. Many people are familiar with the term ‘virtual reality’ but are unsure about the uses of this technology. Gaming is an obvious virtual reality application as are virtual worlds but there are a whole host of uses for virtual reality – some of which are more challenging or unusual than others.
