In evolution of architecture, as different generations
are born, differs building do stand out. Some of these buildings do survive to other
generations in terms of their architectural philosophies which are being
adapted in the new generation. Such buildings become what we call building of
all time; they become buildings that its principles do not fade out as the new
generation set in.
Today, we will be talking about buildings of all time.
FALLING WATER BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT.
Falling water stands as one of
the WRIGHT’S greatest masterpieces both for its dynamism and for its full
integration with the striking environment. It is the building that was fully
designed based on the principles upon which FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT built its
organic architecture philosophy. Built on a hill, it can be seen to look as if
the building grew up
with the hill as it was blended into it. The organic
features of falling water, its ability to complement the natural environment
made it stand out and a lovely place to visit as a tourist. To merge the house with its landscape,
Wright used rough limestone and created strongly horizontal wings that appear
to extend from the rocky ledges of the site, using cantilevers to solve the problem of space he had at the beginning of the design
Kaufman, the owner of the building in his response to why
people love to visit the building said “He (Wright) understood that people were
creatures of nature hence any architecture which conformed to nature would
conform to what was basic in people. For example, although all of falling water
is opened broad bands of windows, people inside are sheltered as if in a deep
cave secured in the sense of the hill behind them”. To simply put Kaufman
statement about falling water, he means that as long as humans are creatures of
nature, they will love organic buildings because it will always be in sync with
their inner selves.
Please feel free to add your own building of all time.
Thanks.
